When planting new grass, it's important to properly prepare the soil. Begin by tilling the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches. Conduct a soil test to ensure the necessary nutrients are present for a healthy lawn. Apply any required fertilizers or soil amendments, such as lime or gypsum, and work them evenly into the soil. Smooth the surface to create an ideal seedbed. Sow the grass seed according to the recommended seeding rate, and rake or harrow it lightly to cover the seed approximately 1/8 inch deep. Keep the area well-watered until the seeds germinate and the seedlings are established.

For overseeding or reseeding an existing lawn, it's crucial to first prepare the soil. Conduct a soil test, fertilize, and add any necessary amendments. Mow the existing grass as low as possible, remove the clippings, and rake, harrow, or aerate the soil to allow the new seed to make contact with the soil. Sow the seed and gently rake it in.

If your lawn is dominated by undesirable grasses, you'll need to first eliminate them using a non-selective herbicide. Once the lawn has turned brown, you can proceed with the seeding program, starting with a soil test and amendments as needed.

For bare spots, mow the lawn closely, remove debris, and rake or aerate the area to prepare the seedbed. Conduct a soil test, fertilize, and add amendments as necessary before seeding.
